Breast lift
Overview
Each woman wants to have beautiful, high, elastic breasts. However with age,
after pregnancy and breast-feeding, with body weight loss, skin loses its
natural elasticity and vigor. Breasts become saggy and droopy and a breast
lift is needed to correct this condition.
Indications for breast lift
Mastopexy or breast lift is a surgery changing breasts position, placing
nipples and areolas on the top of mammary gland (areola size decrease and
improvement of its contour and size is also possible) and returning normal
shape and firmness to the breasts.
Is hospitalization necessary?
The surgery is performed under general or local anesthesia, depending on
patient’s desire and general condition. You will be hospitalized on the day of
the surgery and undergo a short preparation.
Breast lift
In most instances, mastopexy is performed under general anesthesia as an
outpatient procedure, and takes between one and three and a half hours. Breast
lift is in essence similar to any other lifting procedure in cosmetic surgery.
It requires removal of excess skin, fat and tissue and pulling the remaining
skin together to create firm, youthful looking breasts.
At the end of the surgery the breast is covered with elastic bandages to
reduce the risk of postoperative complications and make recovery easier. After
a time bandaging will be replaced with special underwear.
Are the scars from breast lift visible?
Stitches are usually located around the areola, in a vertical line extending
downwards from the nipple area, and along the lower crease of the breast.
Breast lift leaves permanents scars, of which only the vertical scar between
the areola and the crease under the breast is visible. However even this scar
will eventually fade out to a thin white line.
What complications may occur after the surgery
Ideal symmetry of nipples, areolas and mammary glands cannot be achieved,
although striving for it is one of the surgery goals. Sensitivity of
nipples, areolas and mammary glands usually decreases and then gradually
improves; in some cases it can be totally lost. Edema and bruises can remain
in the operation area for several weeks. The final result will be visible
after several months.
How long is the postoperative period?
Usually it is necessary to stay at a hospital for 3-5 days. Stitches are
removed in 7-14 days. Light housekeeping work is possible in 5-7 days, usual
rehabilitation period is 2 weeks.
It is necessary to wear special underwear (bra) for 1.5-2 months after the
surgery to support and form mammary glands. Final forming of new breasts
takes 3-4 months after the procedure.
